Initial Wool Lanolizing:
Your wool covers will need to be washed and lanolized before use. This conditions the wool and makes them leak proof. If you ever notice your wool covers getting really damp during use, then they will need to be relanolized. To lanolize, dissolve a pea size amount of pure lanolin (like Lansinoh) in a cup of very hot water. Run tepid water into your sink and add the wool cover to get it wet. Remove the cover and add the dissolved lanolin mixture. You may add some soap (wool wash or baby shampoo) to the water as well. Put the wool cover back into the sink and let soak for several hours. Do not rinse. Remove cover and roll in a towel gently to remove excess water. Dry flat.

To wash your wool, run tepid water over the bar into your sink or washing machine If you like bubbles (not necessary, but FUN!), rub the bar between your hands to create a lather. The water will appear milky and will have a film on the top…that’s the lanolin. Soak, swirl, or swish your wool cover or soaker in the water and let it rest as long as you like. You may rub the bar GENTLY on any stains before washing. You may rinse the cover but it is not necessary. Rinsing in cooler water (but not cold) is best so you do not wash away the lanolin.
Store the wool wash bar in a cool, dry place. Use some sort of dish or rack that will allow air to circulate around the bar. When you use a bar of soap that is allowed to completely dry between uses, you prolong the life of the soap and eliminate waste. Do not leave the bar in the wash water to soak with the wool or allow it to be agitated in the washer.
To wash your wool, run tepid water into your sink or washing machine and add about a teaspoon of wool wash per gallon of water/per garment. The water will appear milky and will have a film on the top…that’s the lanolin. Soak, swirl, or swish your wool cover or soaker in the water and let it rest as long as you like. You may apply the liquid wool wash directly to stains before washing. You may rinse the cover but it is not necessary. Rinsing in cooler water (but not cold) is best so you do not wash away the lanolin.
Store liquid wool wash upright in a cool, dry place with the disc cap completely closed. Be sure the inside of the cap is clean. Caked up soap will prevent the cap from clicking entirely shut and may cause leaking. Lanolin and insoluble soaps may settle or separate after periods of unuse. Shake gently to redistribute before use.
*By using a wool wash that contains lanolin, you will help condition your wool and avoid any extra lanolizing. Wool covers only need to be washed when they get soiled or stinky (every week or so).
The beautiful thing about wool is that it can also absorb without causing leaks. Wool will absorb up to 30% of it's weight before feeling damp to the touch. Paired with a good fitted, wool covers make great night time covers for heavy wetting children.
